Who can borrow materials from the library?

All physicians, residents, fellow, associates and students rotating at Ascension Providence Hospital (both the Southfield and Novi campuses) may check out materials.

Borrowing Policies

Ascension Providence Hospital Loan period: 4 weeks for books, 2 weeks for the NRP book, 1 week for CDs and DVDs, and 3 days for board review DVDs.

Associates at the Novi campus are granted an extra week to take into account delivery time.

A maximum of 10 items can be checked out at one time.
     Exception: There is a limit of 2 board review DVDs.

A courtesy notice is emailed two days before the items are due.

How to borrow materials from the library

  1. Register for a Library Account to borrow from the Library.
  2. Search the Library Catalog to find materials available for loan, online use or library use only.
  3. Items Marked AVAILABLE should be on the library shelves. Come to the library to check out these items. If you work primarily at the Novi campus, you may call to have the item(s) sent to you via interoffice mail.
  4. Request to borrow items we do not own.

How do I renew materials?

Renewal Policy:

Renewal period: same as loan period
     Exception: Audiovisual materials may not be renewed.
Number of renewals: 1
Renewals NOT available if:
  • Item is on hold
  • Renewal limit reached
  • Items borrowed from other libraries may or may not be renewed depending on the lending library's policy.

How do I return a book?

Hand directly to the librarian or place the item(s) in the drop box near the reference desk in the library.

 

Overdues

Overdue Notices

Courtesy notice: emailed 2 days before the item is due.
First notice: emailed 7 days after an item is due.
Second notice: emailed one week later.
Third notice: emailed one week after second notice.
Collection notice: emailed one week after third notice then every 30 days until the items are returned or paid for.

Fines and Bills

The library does not charge fines for overdue books.
Cost of lost or damaged items depends on cost of item, plus a $15 processing fee for each item lost or damaged.

Blocked Library Privileges

Once you receive a collection notice you are blocked from:

  • Borrowing items
  • Using our document delivery service
  • Using library resources off-campus.
 
If you are a medical student, evaluations will not be sent to your medical school if your account is not cleared by the time your rotation ends.
 
If you are a resident, you will not graduate until your account is cleared.
 
Your account will be unblocked upon return of all materials or the payment for their replacement made.
